 I dog eared , I underlined and I've re-read several pages of Bill and Pam Farrel's book The 10 Best Decisions Every Parent Can Make - a proactive parenting approach that includes creative and effective ideas for:

- creating character building opportunities for your kids
- helping your kids make wise decisions
- building a family legacy your children will cherish
- teaching kids to live lives of devotion and service
- skills for both basic life and relational
- encouraging your child's faith in God

The authors share real life experiences and give practical advice, tips and how to's. 

This book will help you to understand who your child is, the gifts God has given them and how to approach life with them as well as letting them go.

There are books you read once and place back on the shelf and then there are books you re-visit for parenting how to's, advice and inspiration  The 10 Best Decisions Every Parent Can Make is one of my recent go to books I refer back to as I continue to  travel this mom journey.

First Things First - Kurt and Brenda Warner

"Mom why are you reading about Kurt Warner" was the question that came out of my 9 years old sons mouth -  I had no idea he even knew who Kurt Warner was  I replied with "do you know who he is?".  His giggling response was
"Yes, he is the quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals." He was correct and now I had the opportunity to explain to him why I was reading a book about a football player he obviously keeps up on.

I was in the process of reading First Things First by Kurt and Brenda Warner a book not about Kurts successful football career but about his success in putting family first - the day to day life of raising 7 kids and how family, faith, and giving to others— their family motto,  drives everything they do.   Kurt and Brenda write openly about their marriage, the values they are working to instill in their kids, things they’ve done right, mistakes they’ve made, the importance of giving back, and the legacy they hope to leave behind along with the family rules they live by.

I have recently read several books about various families, their values and how they manage their families and homes - this book by far related to me in our family philosophy, the rules we attempt to instill in our own children, the mission of our family and the craziness of raising a large family.  From faith to family our goal has been to teach our kids the priority of God, Family and others and as one reads First Things First there is no doubt you will be inspired in your parenting journey as the Warners share real life ups and downs along their journey.

Preparing Kids For The Big Move

Although adults can deal with the stress and changes that come with moving into a new home, children will probably tell you a different story.

Their toys, furniture and clothes are missing. They’ve said goodbye to everything that’s familiar to them, including best friends, parks, school and the familiar surroundings of their neighborhood. Depending on the age of the child, this could all be a very frightening and stressful period.

One of the simplest, and probably easiest way to prepare and facilitate the transition for your child is to connect their moving day experiences through a story. This will not only change their perspective, but can answer several questions and allow them to relate to someone their own age who had a similar experience. Whether it’s a concern about making new friends, or what to do with the ones they’re leaving behind. Also, understanding that moving away doesn’t mean that they’ll have to change anything else about themselves.

Surely, there’s a lot that your child will like to talk about. So before the moving companies arrive, why not be ready to start your new adventures with the following books.

1. “Moving” by Fred Rogers (Ages 2-6): If it has to do with neighborhoods and friendly neighbors, Mr. Rogers has it covered. This book helps kids understand the process of moving and eases their worries and fears by showing them the bright side of everything that’s happening, from the confusion of packing, saying goodbye to the people and places they love, to making new friends.

2. “I Want to Go Home” by Sarah Roberts (Ages 3-5): “Sesame Street” is where the air is sweet and friendly neighbors meet, which is what Big Bird misses the most when he goes on a trip to the beach to visit Granny Bird. It seems that everything reminds him of his friends back home, until he meets a boy named, Wally. Wally has his own special cave, which reminds Big Bird of his friend back home, Mr. Snuffleupagus. After a while, Wally and Big Bird begin to share more moments together and enjoy the rest of the vacation playing games, sharing a popsicle, and becoming the best of friends. Certainty a sweet tale for younger kids as your family gets ready to move.

3. “The Berenstain Bears’ Moving Day” by Stan and Jan Bernstein (Ages 3-6): When it comes to anything pertaining to kids, these bears are the specialists, and moving day is no different. This book marks the beginning of the family’s move to their new and now very famous tree house. Although it’s an exciting time for everyone, Brother Bear is hesitant and not sure if he’ll be able to make new friends.

4. “Maggie Doesn’t Want to Move” by Elizabeth Lee O’Donnell (Ages 5-8): Third-grader, Simon doesn’t want to move. He doesn’t want to leave his friends, favorite playground, old house or his understanding teacher. However, instead of telling his parents exactly how he feels, Simon decides to blame it on his little sister, Maggie. He then places her in his little red wagon and runs away to his friend’s house. His parents realize what’s going on and give the kids a tour of their new neighborhood, including the beautiful country park. Simon enjoys this very much and decides that he, er—Maggie, does want to move after all.

5. “Hey, New Kid” by Betsy Duffey (Ages 8-11): Being the “new kid” is a lot of pressure of a child. Children often ask themselves questions about whether they’re cool enough, or have the right skills? Will their ordinary life be exciting enough to fit into their new school? This is what happens to the new student, Cody. He decides that being a regular kid isn’t enough, and prefers to be Super Cody. He tells his new friends at school that his father is FBI agent, his pet emu, and of course—his great rollerblading skills. The kids are fascinated with his stories, and Cody doesn’t think much about it. That is until someone decides to throw a skating party!

Moving is hard and adding anxious and scared children to the mix doesn’t make for a pleasant transition. With these books and a lot of open communication, your kids will understand the move better and probably even be excited about their new area, new home and new set of friends. It is also important to tell them that just because you are moving, it doesn’t mean their old life is gone…only that new experiences await them.

*”One Day at A Time”: Purchase a nice blank journal (with enough pages for a month). Write the date numbers only, so that this gift can be re-read any month of the year. Write a brief thought, compliment, or other encouraging note on each page. Tell your loved one what you love about them and why they are special to you. Thank them for the blessings they bring to your life. Once you have completed the journal, write a card that explains that they can only look at each page on the day indicated- no fair looking ahead!). This personalized journal gift idea can be adapted for a child by including drawings, pictures (either drawn, cut from magazines, or family photos), jotting down little riddles, or offering a special “gift” for the day (hugs, special activity together, etc.)

* Communicate Your Love, Creative Ways to Say “I Love You”:

-“Auto Mate”: Record messages or favorite songs of your loved one on CD. Surprise them by placing this in their car, to send them off on their day with your thoughts of them. Another day, leave their favorite treat for them in their auto or simply a little note of encouragement.

-“Extra, Extra!”: Using Microsoft Publisher (or other software), create a newspaper, featuring funny stories, news items about their recent accomplishments, life stories, and interviews with others about how your loved one is special to them. Community classes at a local community college, errand services, senior center job banks, and babysitting are some options. Research the licenses you may need, and join clubs or organizations where people looking for your talents may be.

Magazines: Cash in on your stories, jokes, ideas and other great ideas. The thrill of seeing your name in print, in a magazine can be great- better is being paid for your thoughts. Acquire contact information with a visit to the magazine section of your favorite library. Try, try again – when it happens, it’s inspiring!

Bottom Line: Whatever your skill or interest, there is an organization in your community to begin finding your extra income. Sometimes making extra income begins with volunteer work and/or networking to acquire the skills those doing the hiring require. Utilize community bulletin boards, Craigslist.org, church newsletters, etc. to find your opportunities.
