Geocaching with Your Family

Have you heard of Geocache [GEE-oh-cash]?   Geocaching is a great way to get your whole family out of the house... exploring the nature and having fun!!

The word geocache comes from two words. The first is the prefix geo, meaning "Earth". The second is cache which is a safe place for hiding or storing something.

So a geocache is something that is hidden somewhere on Earth! It is a new word created for the hobby geocaching. People gather up a few little odds and ends and put them in a watertight container. Then they hide it outdoors somewhere, record the coordinates using their GPS receiver, and post the coordinates on the Web.

Before You Go

•Find a geocache that will meet your immediate goals. Are you looking for a difficult hike or an easy adventure?
•If you're headed out on the trail, pack any needed supplies such as water, food and extra clothing. Bring both a map and a compass. Check geocache terrain and difficulty ratings.
•For safety, let someone know where you are going.
•Do not forget your GPS and extra batteries.

Get Out and Play

•Mark your car as a waypoint to ensure your safe return.
•Be mindful of the environment, practice Cache In Trash Out.
•Bring friends and family with you; sharing the experience can be very rewarding. Pets are usually welcome, too!
•Remember that distances can be deceiving. A geocache can take longer to find depending on trails, rivers and other obstacles.

Share Your Experience

•If you take something from the geocache, leave something of equal or greater value.
•Write about your experience in the geocache logbook.
•Place your geocaching stories and photos online.

A geocache can have all sorts of things in it. Generally, there are small items of little value. When you go geocaching, you take items to trade with the geocache. For example, you might find a geocache that has a CD, a toy car, trading cards, and other stuff. You might choose to take the car and leave a kazoo. The general rule is, if you take an item, you leave an item. Most geocaches also have a log book where you record the date and your name (or code name--most geocachers have a code name just for fun). Some geocaches even have a camera so that you can snap a picture of yourself. Never take the camera.

Which geocache should I pick?

You'll probably want to start with a geocache that is close to your home (or school if you are with a school or scout group). The other consideration is difficulty and terrain. Both are rated from one to five, with five being most challenging. Difficulty refers to how hard it is to find the geocache. Terrain refers to how challenging the terrain is: fairly level ground is a one. Most kids and families should start with geocaches with a 1/1 to 2/2 rating. These are still challenging!

Below is a list of different websites to go to for all ages.  They will provide you with instructions on how to get started on your FAMILY ADVENTURE FULL OF MEMORIES!!!

Frozen Lemonade Cupcakes For Mothers Day

As a little girl I would often visit my grandparents home and outside of their home was this huge   Lemon bush in which I  loved picking the lemons from and eating them just as I would an orange this must have been the beginning of my love for lemons.
Now I enjoy finding recipes that are lemon flavored especially baked goods. Here is the most recent one I found from Nestle and I think would be a perfect Mothers Day dessert.

Frozen Lemonade Cupcakes
from Nestle
You can have your lemonade and eat it too! Individually-sized pound cakes are dressed with a flavorful whipped topping and garnished with fresh lemon peel. Serve frozen for a refreshing anytime treat to stay cool this summer.

Ingredients:
  • 1 can (14 ounces) NESTLÉ LA LECHERA FAT FREE Sweetened Condensed Milk or NESTLÉ CARNATION Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 container (6 ounces) frozen lemonade or limeade concentrate (about 2/3 cup), partially thawed
  • 1 tub (12 ounces) frozen light whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 (10.75 ounces) frozen reduced fat or fat free pound cake
  • Grated lemon peel (optional)
Instructions:
PAPER-LINE 18 muffin cups.

CUT pound cake into 18 slices. Using 1 3/4 inch-round cookie cutter or appropriate size to fit into paper liners, cut slices into rounds (discard cake scraps or save for another use). Place cake rounds into paper liners.

COMBINE sweetened condensed milk and lemonade concentrate in large bowl; stir well. Stir a large spoonful of whipped topping into mixture. Fold in remaining whipped topping. Spoon evenly into liners. Freeze for 2 hours. Cover; freeze for several hours or overnight before serving. Garnish with lemon peel.

Show Your Love for Mom

 By: Amy Hannold
247Moms Frugal Living Editor

Mothers Day is May 8th this year.  It’s time to begin preparing some homemade, unique ways to show our love for Mom.  I encourage you to share the joy of Moms and gift creation with your kids.  These ideas are affordable and will express thoughtful, lasting sentiments to Mom.

TeacherVision.com
Free registration to their email updates will open 7 free, printable resources for Mothers Day.  Suggested age for these activities ranges from Pre-Kindergarten through the 8th grade.  Activities range from the history of Mothers Day, poem writing, tissue paper flowers, “pop-up” portraits and my favorite – “Roses for Mom”.  This page of drawn roses invites the child to write “promises” of how they will show love for mom.  They can color the roses, cut them out and then give them to Mom (perhaps as part of a handmade card).

Free, printable Mothers Day stationery, word searches, Mad Libs, color-me cards and coloring pages will suit your household for creating a fun, special Mothers Day.

One of my favorite sites for finding creative activities – even for the un-creative mom.  (I love the process of creating, once we’ve found the activity.)  Bingo cards, anagrams, craft ideas, and more await you.

Fisher-Price.com
Fisher-Price offers a free collection of printable greeting cards your kids can color for Mothers Day – or any day!

Other Ideas:
Memories for Mom:
Search back into your own childhood years, find a picture (or a memory) and create a card for your Mom.  You’ll both enjoy the time you spend remembering your childhood, and perhaps she’ll have some more advice for the stage of motherhood you’re currently in.

Photo Gifts:
Now is the time to find that perfect photo of the kids and use it to create a photo gift.  Online or in-store you can find some great deals on just the perfect gift.  Give Mom something she can show off, bragging about her special little ones.

Gift Baskets:
Use your frugal skills to create an especially collected assortment of Mom’s favorites.  Whether it be food, books, or small luxuries, show mom you’ve thought of what she likes.

Share these ideas – even with “Dad”, so that he can help the kids create something special.  Enjoy Mothers Day.  Celebrate the “Moms” in your life!  Also, remember Moms with spouses deployed, single moms, and others who also may benefit from some special attention on Mothers Day.
