"A Roundup of Holiday e-Return Policies"

Holiday e-shopping has begun, and with it the potential for gift returns. Because online merchants have different policies, it pays to read the fine print before you buy.

Some stores only give 30-days leeway, which means recipients can't return purchases after Christmas. Happily, some merchants are changing these deadlines for the holidays but, because there are websites who truly believe "fineprint" means "itsy bitsy print in a very pale pastel," FreeShipping.org compiled a list of major e-retailers and their return policies for 2011.

Ann Taylor
You've got 60 days to return Ann Taylor purchases but, if you don't have the receipt, only a store credit is issued. Gifts returned online will result in an e-gift certificate, so be sure to include your e-mail address on the return receipt. An in-store gift return yields a hardcopy gift certificate in the amount paid by the sender.

Bath & Body Works
Because Bath and Body Works believes "no sale is ever final," they don't need to extend their holiday deadline. You don't need a sales receipt or shipping invoice for gifts, but they can only be returned to brick-and-mortar Bath and Body Works stores.

Cabela's
You've got 90 days to return a Cabela's purchase, which makes everything nice and easy, until you learn you only receive a store credit or gift card when you don't have a receipt. If you need to return a gift, print a return form and send it to Cabela's customer service address or bring it in to any of their retail stores.

Coldwater Creek
There's no deadline for Coldwater Creek returns by mail or to a retail outlet. If you're sending it back and don't have a receipt or packing slip, make sure you include your name and address on a note enclosed with the package.

Best Buy
Enjoy Best Buy free shipping now through Dec. 27, and return gift purchases -- with no exclusions -- from Nov. 13 through Jan. 4. The electronics behemoth is spreading the holiday cheer even further by removing restocking fees for all products, including special orders, within this timeframe.

Costco
Costco's standard return policy is a liberal 365 days, so there's no need to extend their deadline for the holidays. In addition, Costco refunds membership fees if a customer isn't satisfied. Refunds for Internet purchases include shipping and handling charges.

endless.com
The online-only shoe merchant provides a generous 365 days for returns with guaranteed free shipping. Use the Endless online returns center for proper processing.

JCPenney
The best part of JCPenney's online returns is they pay for shipping and handling, no matter what your reason for returning the product. You have up to 90 days and, with a gift receipt, will receive a JCPenney gift card in the amount of purchase.

Kmart

You'll need an original receipt or email confirmation dated within 90 days of the original date of purchase. No exceptions, apparently.

Kohl's
Return any item, anytime, for any reason. Have your receipt? You'll get a full refund or even exchange. No receipt? No problem. Kohl's will give you a refund, an exchange or store credit.

Lands' End
Now through Nov. 15, enjoy Lands' End free shipping plus take 25% off your purchase. For returns without an exchange, use the return label for a flat shipping fee of $6.95. You also can return your order to any Sears or Lands' End store and entirely avoid shipping costs.

L.L.Bean
The sky's the limit with L.L. Bean, which has no return deadline and doesn't require authorization before you ship your gift back to them. Just download and fill out an online form or use the form printed on the packing slip.

Macy's
The return deadline for Macy's is a generous 180 days and you don't need a receipt because they have a program that identifies products in their system. Too cool! Gifts will receive a store credit or exchange. Please note the deadline for jewelry purchases is only 30 days.

Mainline Menswear
Basically, you can return any Christmas gifts ordered from Nov. 1 to Dec. 24 up to 14 days after Christmas, which only gives you until Jan. 7.

Sears
Return the gift in its original packaging, with the original receipt or email confirmation, within 90 days of purchase for a refund or exchange. Alternately, you can return a purchase from Sears.com to one of their stores.

Shoebacca.com
As with Endless, Shoebacca provides totally free shipping both ways and a 365-day window in which to return or exchange unwanted gifts.

Sierra Trading Post
Sierra Trading Post makes it easy. You have up to six months and will receive instant credit plus $2.95 shipping on your next order. If you prefer, STP will give you a refund.

Toys 'R' Us and Babies 'R' Us
Online purchases returned by mail within 90 days to their online Returns Center by mail are refunded to the original form of payment, which means the gift giver will know your dirty little secret and you'll come up empty handed. Instead, make returns to a Toys 'R' Us or Babies 'R' Us store for a merchandise credit.

Victoria's Secret
Now through Nov. 16, you can enjoy Victoria's Secret free shipping, but you've got 90 days to return that lacy tidbit for cash. Ater that deadline, Victoria's Secret will only provide store credit. To return gifts, check the box on the Return/Exchange Form attached to the original invoice indicating you're returning a gift and provide your shipping information. If you don't have the original invoice, use their printable return and exchange form.

Walmart
You can return or exchange most store items with a receipt within 90 days of purchase. Visit walmartstores.com to see exceptions for electronic and regulated items. You can return online purchases to any Walmart store.

Zappos
Another great shoe deal: Zappos free shipping is good both for purchases and returns. Whether you're unhappy with a purchase or simply change your mind, Zappos will provide a full refund or exchange within 365 days of purchase. You'll need the original packaging, however, to make the return.

FreeShipping.org is the largest resource on the Internet linking shoppers to free-shipping deals offered by nearly 4,000 online merchants.

Stretch The Mighty Gasoline Dollar

Stretch the mighty dollar in your mom travels-

With the continual rise in gasoline prices I have been reading up on how to stretch the mighty gasoline dollar.

I came across one website that was filled with tons of great information on saving money on gasoline. Here are a few examples from their site http://www.wikihow.com/Save-Money-on-Gas

Combine trips. If you can, do several short trips in one longer trip. You will save fuel and time. Make lists to avoid having to go back. Call ahead to avoid wasted trips.
Park in the first spot you find. If you wander all over the parking lot looking for that really close parking space, you'll use more gas. Don't be afraid to walk a ways, if it comes to that - the walk will do you good!

Join a loyalty club. Some gas stations, department stores and grocery stores offer lower prices when you present their membership card, but keep your eyes open and verify that their prices are really lower than other stations in your neighborhood. ( Safeway and Fred Meyers have these type of clubs).

Park in the shade. Gasoline actually evaporates right out of your tank, and it does so faster when you park directly in the sun - winter or summer. Parking in the shade also keeps it cooler inside, so you will need less A/C to cool off when you get back in. If there is no shade available, park so that your gas tank (the actual tank under the car, not the valve to fill it) is facing away from the direct sun.
Use a global positioning system (GPS) to help you navigate and find the fastest, shortest distance to your destination. Avoiding hills and stops will increase your gas mileage.
Clean out any unnecessary items in your car. If you have heavy objects in your car that you don't need, remove them. If your car is lighter, it will use less fuel to get where you're going.
Change the oil regularly Use a synthetic oil instead of mineral oil. This will cause your engine to run better and give you better mileage.

Check the air pressure in the tires every week. Buy an inexpensive air pump and an accurate tire gauge. Keep all tires inflated to the pressure recommended for your car.

For additional tips on stretching your gasoline dollar check out http://www.wikihow.com/Save-Money-on-Gas.

Do you have a stretch the mighty dollar idea to share with the 24/7 MOMS? Email me at trisha@247moms.com to share it in a future 24/7 MOMS publication.

Frugal Greeting Cards

Greeting cards can almost cost as much as the gift these days, and personally I would rather put the money toward a nicer gift than a card. I know, I know - the wonderful words written in these cards can be very meaningful. So, how do we cut back yet still share meaningful thoughts?

1. Boxed greeting card assortment – I have, over the years, purchased boxes of miscellaneous greeting cards at my local warehouse ( Costco) or Target stores. These have not only saved me money, but have saved me time when I am in a last minute situation needing a card.

2. Dollar Store Cards – Plan ahead and purchase multiple cards for upcoming birthdays, graduations, Father's day and other events you will need greeting cards for and purchase them on your next Dollar Store trip, saving you both money and time.

3. Create your own cards - using scarp book supplies, stamping kits or even right off the good ole’ computer.

Everyone panic: peanut butter prices set to rise!

OK, please DON’T panic.

It’s bad for your health and to paraphrase someone very wise, worrying won’t add or even buy you an extra hour anyhow.

So here’s the scoop: peanut prices are on the rise due to a really dismal peanut growing season. Kraft will increase the price of its peanut butter by 40% starting October 31st. Scary coincidental, right?

So what can you do about it?  Read my friend Angela from The Coupon Project  tips on  how to deal with the soon to be high costs of Peanut Butter.  This could be a tragedy to our PB&J loving kids.

10 Ways Grocery Stores Trick You Into Spending More

by Echo Surina / from TLC

We all enjoy the thrill of saving a buck, right? The savvy shoppers among us do all sorts of things to save a few cents here and there at grocery stores, such as cutting coupons, scoping out sales and using a membership card to receive discounts.

But food stores, from gourmet retailers to budget grocery markets, have ways of getting you to fork over more of your money to them -- without you even knowing it! Sure, there's a difference between engaging in cutthroat business practices and unabashedly cheating customers. Some methods are shadier than others. Here are 10 common ways grocery stores trick you into spending more.

10: Mislabeling Meats

This tactic may seem so blatantly shady that it's hard to believe stores get away with it. Make no mistake, though: It happens. A lot.

Many grocery stores have been caught duping shoppers with this bait-and-switch -- labeling the weight of packaged meats as more than the food actually in the package. Sure, some stores intentionally put the wrong weight on containers, plain and simple. But there are more surreptitious approaches worth watching out for. Factoring the weight of the package into the reported weight of the food is one way. Another is coating meat in ice so that you end up paying a premium few cents more, which can add up over time.

9: Water-packing Meats

Have you ever seen a label that says something like "up to 10 percent solution"? This is another trick stores use -- packaging meats in a water solution.

Beware of water-packed meats because the price per ounce includes all that solution. Sometimes, you'll spot stickers that claim the solution enhances the food's flavor or its other qualities. Perhaps. But keep in mind that water is relatively free for the grocery store to use, it increases the food's weight and it inevitably jacks up the price you pay. Cheap meats aren't always so inexpensive when you consider hidden costs like this one.

8: Hiding Flawed Foods

Bruised strawberries, fatty cuts of meat, torn slices of cheese: What do markets do with damaged foods like these? Bury them in packages and sell them, of course!

Instead of tossing out or donating flawed foods, stores will instead strategically arrange them among undamaged goods. This way, you don't discover the blemishes until you get home. The chance of customers like you going through the hassle of returning to the store, waiting in line and exchanging the item is pretty slim. Choose packages that clearly show contents, or pay extra attention to what you're buying to avoid getting suckered and stuck with rotten food.

7: Grouping Items That Go Together

Finding the foods you want at your local supermarket is something you're probably very familiar with. You go to the bakery for bread products and the butcher's counter for meats. Aisles are arranged by like products. Right?

This isn't always the case. You may not have noticed foods that go together are displayed side by side, even though they typically would be stocked in different parts of the store. Extra-thick, natural bacon and premium-brand refrigerated hash browns (neither is on sale, of course) get placed next to the egg shelf. Or an organic salsa gets placed next to tortilla chips instead of on the condiment aisle with all of the other salsas. The store's motivation in doing this is to suggest tasty (full-priced) pairings that you'll grab out of convenience instead of going to the other side of the store to compare prices.

6: Diluting Liquids

Nabbing the cheapest laundry detergent doesn't always equate to going home with the best deal. Store-brand liquids like cleansers or fruit juices are sometimes diluted. While you may only pay a fraction of what a name brand costs, you could be buying less of the active ingredients for the same price -- or more -- because the product is so watered down.

For instance, a label that reads "25 percent more" can mean 25 percent more in weight or in container size -- not the active ingredients. "Fruit juice blend" can mean a mixture is made of 20 percent juice concentrate and 80 percent sugar water.

The solution for consumers (pun intended): Question ambiguous bargain claims, and become a label reader.

5: Making Riddles of Unit Pricing

Just because you made a midnight ice cream run and are standing in the freezer section in your sweats doesn't mean you're going to slack on doing your due diligence now that you're there. Which one is the best deal right now? This question can be tougher to answer than you might think, thanks to grocery stores' creative use of pricing units. They mix it up on purpose. You'll find that some ice creams are priced per ounce, others per pint and others per quart. It's challenging to compare apples to apples -- or fudge ripple to rocky road. Bring a calculator or conversion chart cheat sheet to help you.

4: Placing Priciest Items at Eye level

You're most apt to notice items right in front of you when shopping. Call it human nature. It's no wonder that distributors and manufacturers pay a premium price to put their products on shelves at eye level. This prime product placement zone is where the most expensive products are usually found. Fortunately, there's an easy way to avoid falling for this trick. Avoid that middle section! Pretty simple, right? The next time you go to the grocery store, force yourself to scout out groceries on shelves up high and down low; this is usually where the less expensive brands are displayed.

3: Setting up a Strategic Floor Plan

Many of us purchase the same essential foods like bread, milk and eggs. These foods are so common and so popular that grocery stores go out of their way to place them as far apart as possible. This way, they get the majority of their shoppers, like you, to canvas an entire store from one end to another to get a few key items.

But why? Their hope is that you buy more. When you've been exposed to more goods during your hunt for what you really need, you'll probably toss in odds and ends you didn't intend to buy that simply look enticing in the moment.

2: Reorganizing the Store Periodically

Another way food stores indirectly trick their consumers is to reorganize (or disorganize) products periodically. Entire food sections can shift from one side of the building to the other, sometimes as often as once a year. When stuff is in a different spot, clearly you can't readily find what you need. So, what do you do? Wander up and down aisles searching for the things on your shopping list. You see a lot of items that you wouldn't otherwise notice. Animal-shaped straws -- the kids would love them! A type of parsley not carried here previously -- perfect! Inevitably, you toss some of it into your cart. The store wins again.

1: Placing TVs at Checkout Points

It's not commonplace yet, but some food marts have started putting TVs at checkout lines. The effect is twofold. These screens expose you to product ads, perhaps prompting you to buy more stuff either during that store visit or the next time you shop. They also distract you. You're probably not as focused on making sure the cashier rings up items correctly. Nor do you notice that your child snuck a magazine or wad of candy onto the conveyor belt that just got scanned and bagged.

It's not hard to get sidetracked or distracted from the task at hand while grocery shopping. Sometimes, it's easiest to stay focused (and on budget) by simply sticking to your list and staying attentive at the checkout counter.

TIPS THAT I ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION TO & WANT TO PASS ON(by Leslie Pleasants):
*Meats: A lot of times you will see BOGO(buy one, get one free).  Take note on pricing.  Sometimes I have noticed stores raise the original price of the meat and then run this special so you are not actually getting that great of a deal.

*10 for 10:  You do NOT have to buy 10 to get the deal.  You can buy 1 and get it for just a buck.  :)  Just in case you didn't know.

*Buy 10 participating items get $4.00 off:  Pay close attention.   Some stores will run a couple of the similar adds around the store at the same time but you have to read the actual store ad.  Could be that one is only for a certain brand and another is for another brand.  So pay attention.

*Expiration Date:  Always, always check the expiration date.  You would be surprised how many items are close to be expired or already are.  If you see a sticker that says "Manager Special".. usually means its about to expire or it already has.  :(  If you ever go home and found out that you bought something that was expired,  take it back to the store with your reciept.  Pretty sure almost all stores should take them back or exchange.

TJ Maxx /Marshalls Frugal Shopping Tips and Giveaway

We all have our favorite stores we shop in some of us like to hit the malls others like thrift stores I personally am a brand name designer shopper who loves to buy at discount prices on everything from clothes accessories to household items and when I say discount I mean up to 60 % off mall store prices.

I'm talking about my shopping addiction to TJ Maxx and Marshalls - I have been known to stop into TJ Maxx and Marshalls  on many of my travel escapades because of the large selection of styles, brand names and variety of products I know I will never walk out empty handed there are many bargains waiting for me on each shopping trip - by biggest problem is deciding what I must have and what I will pass up on due to my shopping budget.  Not only did I find name brands but I find high quality clothing that will last beyond one season of wear.

I have been training my daughters to become savvy bargain shoppers. Each back to school season gives me the opportunity to share my shopping know how with them. Together we have discovered a few tips along the way. Ready to begin your TJ Maxx and Marshall shopping addiction?  Join my daughters and I as we shop till we drop all of the bargains and deals with these tips:

Tip #1 -Make a list - Before heading out to shop be sure to create a need list so you are not overwhelmed when you are shopping each isle of the store moving from clothes to housewares.  A list will help you to keep you on track shopping for the items you are in need of.  Yes I still find a few treasures each time that are not on my list.

Tip #2 - Compare and buy - Check the"Compare at" price on the tags and see what the item would sell for in you local Malls and department stores.  I have found the compare at prices to be extremely accurate and fun to watch my savings grow with each item I place in my cart while shopping.

Tip #3 - Weekly Shopping - Ask store employees when merchandise shipments arrive - Each store receives about 10,000 new pieces of merchandise each week  - so shop weekly.

Tip #4 - Don't forget - TJ Maxx and Marshalls sell wonderful toys, beauty products, luggage, linens and so much more don't think just Clothes when shopping at TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Tip #5 - Last minute buys - Be sure to look at the merchandise being sold in the check out isles and on the check out counter.  You will find great gifts, stocking stuffers and birthday gifts.

On a recent back to school shopping trip to both TJ Maxx and Marshalls with my daughters we found some great deals on not only clothes but items to decorate and prepare one of my daughters college dorm room.  My Favorite deal was finding her Zebra bedding, an entire set including sheets for her dorm room.  The price was 50% off of the regular price a deal we could not pass up.  We also were able to pick up new beauty products such as a Hair drier and salon hair products all at 60% off prices and even school clothes for the two youngest members of our family.

Are you ready to head out to your local TJ Maxx or Marshalls?  First be sure to enter for your Chance to win a $100 shopping card.

Good food choices will contribute to better health over the course of your life, possibly saving you costly medical expenses.

September is “Better Breakfast Month”. Explore recipes which include protein-rich, energy-packed food choices such as eggs, oatmeal, fresh fruit, beans, peanut butter, etc.

Here are a few steps to healthier, more affordable breakfasts:

Get ready for breakfast the night before: Set your breakfast table, slice fruit, peel hardboiled eggs, grate cheese, make waffles, etc.

Discover slow-cooker breakfast delights: Your crock-pot is the tool to use for cooking breakfast while you sleep. Oatmeal, fruit cobbler and egg casseroles ready by morning will save you time as well.

Invest in some re-usable breakfast containers: Avoid buying pre-packaged food items and be ready for mobile breakfasts all week. Divide the cream cheese into individual plastic containers, store tasty dinner leftovers, and make your own bags of “cereal trail mix”.

Buy oatmeal in bulk and prepare instant-oatmeal combinations from a variety of ingredients. You’ll save money and increase the nutrition of your oatmeal breakfast. For a great recipe – and a list of flavor ideas visit: http://everythingishomemade.com/2007/09/26/instant-oatmeal-packs/.

Blend up a Delicious Smoothie: Packaged yogurt and fruit smoothies are in stores – or you can create your own. Here’s a website which will keep you smoothie-slurping a new treat every morning: http://www.smoothieweb.com/.

Family participation: Preparation of this week’s “ready-breakfasts” can be a part of your Sunday family activities. Get the whole family involved in the finding of recipes, discussion of healthy foods, and the choosing of new foods to try. Create sliced and washed fruit bags for upcoming lunches – enjoy!

Use time and energy wisely: Prepare several breakfast-burritos or homemade waffles for your freezer during one cooking session. “Heat and eat” meals will help you keep your healthy breakfast resolution intact, even when you’re short on time.
