Cereal Party Celebration

What do kids love about Saturday mornings?  Hanging out in their PJ's, eating cereal and watching their favorite cartoons.  Why not create a celebration using their favorite Saturday morning rituals.

A cereal party is perfect for an upcoming birthday, a back to school celebration or just a fun way to get friend together for fun.

Begin your planning with these simple ideas:

Friends:  Send out invitations. You can be as simple or creative as you would like from using cartoon characters on your invitations to using the single serve boxes of cereal with your party information attached to them.  Be sure to include date, time, location, attire ( PJ's) and to bring their favorite box of cereal.

Food: here are a few suggestions make it simple or extravagant as you choose:
Cereal ( the guest brought)
Juice
Milk
Baked goods - muffins, scones, donuts etc.
Create a topping bar including sliced fruits, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, raisins, mini marshmallows along with other toppings you choose.

Decorate:  Use bright colors and big cereal bowls

Fun:
Cartoons: Time the party around your kids favorite cartoons or have them on DVD to show during the party.

Games:  - Guess the number of pieces of cereal in a jar ( pour cereal in a clear jar).
- What cereal is it - Pour small amounts of cereal in a muffin tin and have the kids guess what cereal it is without touching or tasting it.  Be sure to number each muffin cup using a sticker or painters tape.
- Play a Trivia game using cereal facts from  the Breakfast bowl. Click here to go there now.

Crafts: - make cereal necklaces using fruit loops.

Favors To Take Home:  Give out cereal bowls and spoons along with a single serve box of cereal or provide Chinese boxes or zip bags to allow kids to create their own take home cereal mix to eat at home.

24 Birthday Celebration Ideas

1. Write on the bathroom mirror with lipstick or window paints Happy Birthday to your child. If you have a Teenager who drives, write on their car.

2. Birthday Fairy - When your child is sleeping place a small gift in their bedroom that the wake up to from the Birthday Fairy. ( my 9 year old invented this celebration idea and still tells me the birthday fairy brought him the gift in his bedroom)

3. Surprise your child with a new Birthday Outfit to wear, school age children love this as they can wear it to school.

4. Present your Child with a badge that says “It’s my Birthday” or a hat/ crown..or create a T-shirt.

5. Serve Breakfast in bed with candle and all . Wake them up to the family singing happy Birthday.

6. Serve a Family Morning Breakfast: Child wakes up to decorated table with a theme (use leftovers from past parties) be sure to have a small gift at their seat. Serve Pancakes with sprinkles or chocolate chips for breakfast.

7. Each year give the Birthday child a special place setting at their birthday meal. ( plate , cup). Or use a Special Birthday plate that every family member gets to use on their Birthday.

8. School Fun - Decorate your child's classroom door with a poster of your child and pictures of them and/ or Deliver Lunch to them at school.

9. Allow your Child to choose their Favorite Meal or place to go out to eat for dinner. Then around the dinner table, have each family member tell the birthday person something the appreciate about them.

10. Decorate the Dinner Table, use a special table cloth, dishes, decorations etc.

11. Bake a cake, then have Dad and birthday child decorate it together the night before the birthday.

12. Have Dad send flowers, candy, cards to school for them.

13. Write a letter or card each year to your child.

14. TEXT, Facebook, or leave message on phone recorder wishing them a happy birthday.

15. Ship a Birthday in a box - if your child is away form home on their birthday.

16. Give them simple gifts all day long : Next to their bed when they wake-up
At their Breakfast table
In their lunch
On their school desk
At the dinner table

17. Create a treasure hunt to find their gift.

18. Give gifts that go with number of years old...5 years old equals 5 pieces of gum or give them the number of gifts they are old so 5 years old 5 gifts.

19. Hang a special birthday flag outside your house.

20. Add to a charm bracelet or commemorative coin collection each year.

21. Mark your child’s height each birthday on a growth stick.

22. Have professional portraits taken each year.

23. Have Birthday guests sign something—bed sheets, pillow cases, piggy banks, frames at the Birthday party.

24. December Birthdays, celebrate with family on the December date then with friends in January - every child likes their birthday to last for a month.

Birthday Party In A Pantry

       
Many of us have gift closets where we buy various gifts ahead and place them on the shelves to be given at upcoming parties and occasions. Several years ago I began what you could call a Party Closet.

I began saving the left over party supplies from my kids birthdays and purchasing supplies ahead of time on clearance. My Party Closet has saved me oodles of money each year as I celebrate my children's birthdays.

* if you don't have closet space you can also use a large storage container with lid that can easily be stored in your garage, bedroom closet shelf etc.

Stock your own Party Closet with:

Balloons
Curling ribbon
Table cloths - both plastic and cloth
Party confetti
Crepe' paper
Party hats
Party horns
Party CD's
Birthday Flag ( to hang outside your home)
Birthday candles
Stick lighter
Special Birthday plate
Leftover or purchased on sale: Party plates, cups and napkins, Party centerpieces, cake topper decorations.

Summer Birthday Party Themes on a Budget

The sun is blazing, the local pool is beyond crowded and you need to take a time out to plan a summer birthday party.

Summer is a wonderful time to plan a party, because you get to have the outside as your canvas, and let your creative juices flow and let loose.  Most families in America are on a tight budget and therefore, the fancy waterpark, children’s museum; local pizza/arcade party isn’t always feasible. So what do you do? Here are my suggestions for some great themed parties you can do on a budget. 

First, a pirate themed party is always a hit, but why not do it outside with a buried treasure and a treasure map. Make pirate hats out of construction paper.  As a craft make a telescope out of a paper towel or toilet paper roll, decorate it with construction paper and other sparkle’s you could even go as far as to have children cut a picture out of a magazine and attach it to one end of the scope so when they look out they actually see something.  Draw a treasure map and have your birthday child and guests search for the “treasure”. Once found the treasure could contain goody bags with bought trinkets from a cheap store or you could buy a bulk bag of sparkly fake crystals. Your little pirate will love the fun of their special day.

 Another idea is to make a backyard birthday splash zone, set up different stations in your backyard each with a different activity. For example, have one station have a sprinkler, another station a tub , big storage containers come in handy for this,  and fill it full of water and dish soap bubbles throw some toys in, wading pool for another station,  sun tan station with lawn chairs for relaxing Play some summer beach music and you are ready to hit the pool.  Make bubbles as an activity here is a link with directions on making homemade bubbles, http://babyparenting.about.com/cs/activities/a/bubbles.htm. 
Older kids may enjoy an outside movie night themed party.  Choose your movies, pop some popcorn and get beverages and set up with a portable DVD player or move your TV outside. Sit on blankets and let the party begin.

Camping birthday party, Start by setting up tents, start a fire and roast hot dogs and smores.  You could even tape a cd of nature sounds to play to make it more realistic. As a party favor make copies of that cd and send it home.  Tell stories and sing songs.

 These are just a few ideas that are sure to have your little ones have a summer birthday they will not forget.

Outdoor Party Games for Kids

Whether its for a birthday, family reunion, hanging out with their friends, camping...  you need to keep your kids entertained during the summer time and try to keep them outside with outdoor Party Games for kids.  The weather is nice they should'nt be inside watching tv or playing video game... they should be enjoying the sunshine and having fun! 

Here are some ideas that you can use to keep your kids busy and giggling at the same time!  :)

1) Balloon Stomp:

Let the kids blow up their own balloons and tie one to their ankle with string. At the 'Go' signal, everyone runs around trying to stomp on and bust each others balloons. The last person with an intact balloon wins.

2) Hula Hoop Contest:

Hula Hoop for each child

Great for a small group of children. Play music to make it more fun. At the 'Go' signal, players begin 'hula hooping' as long as they can. If the hula hoop drops or players touch it with their hands, they're out!

3) Treasure Hunt:

Small Toys
Try this at the beginning of the party. Hide lollies, badges or small toys in the party for the children to find. Adapt the treasure to your theme. Keep in mind that small children become disappointed quickly. Keep a few spare treasures in your pocket, so everyone will find something.

4) Money Dig Party Game:
Money
Sandbox
Hide pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters in the sand box. Empty out all of the sand toys first. Give kids one minute to dig through the sand and find as much money as they can. For some messy fun, instead of sand, you could also hide the coins in a large container filled with Jell-O.

5) Army Men Hunt:

If you have lots of trees in your back yard hide small green army men for kids to find. Give them two minutes to find as many as possible. Make sure they are on the ground, under leaves and hanging from branches. Whoever finds the most wins a prize, plus all the kids can keep the army men they find.

6) Jump Rope Relay:
Jump Ropes for each Child

Form two teams and set the boundaries of the race. At the 'Go' signal, the first two players race to the goal and back, jumping rope. The next player goes, and so on, until the winning team is declared.

7) Name-It Ball:

Have players form a circle. Give one player a rubber ball. That player selects a category, such as "candy bars." He or she then bounces the ball to another player in the circle, who must catch the ball, state an item from the category, such as "Snickers," and keep the ball moving to the next player. If the player can't name an item, holds the ball too long, or repeats an item, he or she is out.


8) Obstacle Course:

Set up an age-appropriate course full of fun activities, such as crawling between patio chairs, leaping over cones, climbing over a swing set, jumping rope five times or running around the grill three times.

9) Loads of Giggles:

This would prove to be a noisy outdoor party game for kids. Make the children stand in a circle. They should not move until you toss a handkerchief in the air. Once the handkerchief is in the air, the children are allowed to laugh or giggle. The moment it touches the ground, the kids need to stop giggling! Anyone caught giggling has to leave the circle!

10) Keep Your Bottle:

Small Plastic Cups
Divide the players into two teams. Choose a good sport (perhaps a parent) to sit, cross-legged, with an empty plastic bottle on their head.
Line up the rest of the team and give the first in line a small plastic cup. Fill up a few large buckets with warmish water and place them between the team members and the good sport.
At the signal, the first team member runs to fill up their cup and then pour it, quickly but carefully, into the plastic bottle. Either continue until one bottle is filled up, or call time and see who has collected the most water. Give the good sports a towel, and the winning team a prize!

11) Bubble Game:
Bubbles for Each Kid w/ Wands

Divide the company into two sides, an even number in each. Stretch a cord or rope at a medium height across the middle of the room. Two children, one from each side, play at a time. Each stands on his side, blows a bubble, and then gently encourages it by blowing toward the opposite side, and over the rope if he can. If it goes over the rope without breaking, a point is scored for that team. Make sure that someone keeps score, and declare a winner after a certain amount of time, or when each child has had one or two goes.

12) The Chocolate Game:

A knife and fork
Some dressing-up items (at least a hat, scarf and gloves)
Two dice

Put the bar of chocolate on the plate with the knives and forks nearby and sit the children around it in a circle. Throw the pile of dressing up clothes into the circle. Give one child the dice.

Children take it in turns to roll the dice on the floor in front of them, passing them around the circle to their left. If a child rolls a double, they leap into the center of the circle, put on the dressing up clothes, and start to unwrap, then eat, the bar of chocolate - but only using the knife and fork. That child keeps going until another child rolls a double, at which point they much co-operate in handing over the dressing up clothes so that the next child gets a turn.

13) The Chopsticks Game:

Pair of Chopsticks

2 Bowls

Marbles

Smartees

Peanuts

Marshmallows

Each child will need a pair of chopsticks, and each child or team will need two bowls and a number of marbles, maltesers, smartees, peanuts or marshmallows.

Place the bowls about 6-8 feet apart, on tables or chairs. Put the objects in one of the bowls. When you call "start", each child must pick up one of his objects, using only his chopsticks, and carry it to the empty bowl. He then returns for the next object, and so on until he has moved all his objects safely across and is the winner.

Hands must not be used at any time! If an object is dropped, it must be picked up and put back in the first bowl. You are only allowed to move one object at a time.

You can make this game easier by varying the objects. Marbles are hardest, marshmallows are easiest!

If you are playing with individual children, we suggest at least 10 objects to make the game last a decent time. For a team challenge, you might want only 3 or 4 objects, depending on the number of children in the team.

12 Helpful Party Planning Tips

I have now planned and thrown over 50 birthday party celebrations for my children and have plenty more to plan and throw. With each party I have learned what I will do again and what I will never do again for future parties.

Being the organized freak that I am, I know that to survive each party, I need to have it organized from beginning to end. So, I have created a list of 12 helpful party planning steps that you might also find helpful as you plan birthday party celebrations for your children.

Enjoy celebrating your child’s birthday with an organized party by using these 12 steps to birthday party success:

1. Choose the theme. Plan the theme. Take your child shopping to pick out their theme and party supplies or use an online party site.Once your child is old enough, sit down with them and allow them to help you in the planning.

2. Choose the party location. You have two options: celebrate at home or host at an outside location. I prefer the at home parties where we can add our own special creative touches to them, and I enjoy inviting other children into my home. It often costs less to have an at-home party. If you choose to use a location outside of your home, be sure to call and reserve your date.

3. Set the date and time. After you choose the date for the party that works best for your family schedule, determine if you will or will not serve a meal, then choose the appropriate time for your party around that decision.How long should your party last? 90 minutes is a good amount of time for the under 8 crowd. 2 to 3 hours for the over 8 crowd - if you have more lengthy activities planned.

4. Plan the day. Sit down and make lists: Theme, Guests, Activities, Menu, Decorations, To Do, To Obtain, and Places To Go.2 ideas I’ve used to organize my planning are: - I created a Birthday Binder where I keep all my lists, ideas and inventory of birthday party supplies and ideas from past parties. This helps me see what I have on hand and what I have done in the past to begin my planning of the next party.- I have used birthday templates from websites I found online by Googling “birthday templates”.

5. Invitations. Be sure when sending out your invitations that you give important details, such as both the start and finish times of the party, if a meal will be served, etc. This allows the parents and guests to know what to expect.I always request the invited guest to RSVP so that I know who got the invitation in case one is lost in the mail.How many should you invite invite? Many use this rule: your child’s age plus one. So, a 6 year old invites 7 guests, a 9 year old invites 10 guests. Do what is comfortable for you. Be sure to have plenty of help. Hire one of your babysitters to come and help you.

6. Menu. Plan what types of food and beverage you will serve. Will you make the cake or order it from your local bakery? If you choose to order a cake, be sure to place your order one week in advance. What additional foods will you serve – a meal or snacks? Take into consideration the preparation time, ages of children you are serving, and where they will eat it. Choose foods that are simple to make and clean-up.Individual packaged snacks and juice boxes don’t go to waste if un-opened and are simple to serve. One idea I have used over the years is to prepare, ahead of time, paper sack lunches in fun colored bags.To avoid spills I use plastic cups with lids and straws.

7. Party Bags. Be sure they are all the same or that they are the same for each gender. Use ideas that go along with your chosen theme. If you plan ahead you can buy items on sale and clearance at end of season sales. Be creative with your goodie bags by using: sand pails, Chinese take out boxes, purses, theme cups, small shipping boxes, decorated paper sacks, etc.

8. Game Planning. Choose age-appropriate games. I generally do not give prizes unless everyone gets a prize. Theme the games with your party. Having a Spiderman party? Then do a spider web treasure hunt by stringing yarn throughout your house. Be creative and search online for ideas.

9. Craft/activity planning. Choose age-appropriate crafts and activities, and don’t be disappointed if your child or another child does not want to participate. Allow them to observe or play quietly while the rest of the kids do the activity. Providing a sit-down activity is a great way to begin the party as children are arriving. It keeps them occupied while you’re greeting parents and getting kids settled into the party.

10. Organize all supplies into a basket. I use a laundry basket for supplies such as: candles, matches, knife to cut cake, tape, game supplies, craft/activity supplies, goodie bags, extra plates napkins etc. Everything you will need from the beginning to end of the party, so it’s all in one place, and you’re not running around your house looking for it. Also, have a box of baby wipes on hand for quick clean ups.

11. Schedule. Write out the party time schedule, and plan to be flexible. This will give you a plan for the party – what will kids do when they arrive, when will they eat, when will they do activities, open gifts, be given goodie bags, eat cake. Having a written time schedule will also keep you from forgetting an activity.

12. Weather. If you are planning an outdoor party, be sure to have an alternate plan in case the weather does not cooperate. It’s no fun having ten 7 year olds eating cake in the rain.Take the time to plan and organize your child’s birthday celebration and you, as the Mom, will be less frazzled on party day

Our good friend Amber is the pro at making them – she was so nice to let us take pictures of her making one so we could share it with all of you! Now on with the Balloon Wreath!

First you need balloons. Lots and lots of balloons.

(2 bags of 72 count…the 1 1/2 to 2 inch sized balloon)

You also need:

1. 2 greening pin packs-found at Craft stores in the artificial plant section.

2. and a straw wreath -leave the plastic on so it doesn’t shed.

You just take a greening pin, stick the balloon in the middle…

and stick it to the straw wreath.

Push it in nice and tight.

Do this over and over and over until the whole wreath is filled in colorful balloons!

What a way to welcome the birthday person with COLOR! My kids love it when the birthday wreath comes out…it is now associated with birthday FUN!!!

Game Board Birthday Party

Recently we celebrated our son's 10th birthday with a Game board party. Below are the various tings I did to create a fun party.

- First I bought a bunch of old board games at a thrift store for $1 and $2

- I decorated the table by first laying down a bright colored plastic tablecloth. Then I used cards and money from Monopoly and other game cards, scattering them about, then topped the table with a clear plastic table cloth.

-I used hard plastic game pieces from Monopoly, Sorry, Scrabble, Chessmen,Connect4, etc. to fill a large clear vase as a centerpiece.

-I used an old Monopoly game board, covered with plastic wrap, as the cake platter.

-I used the old game boxes and stacked them on the table for decoration.

- Each place setting received the same amount of Monopoly money which was then used... to buy the party food: Hot dogs, chips, watermelon, pop, ice cream cones.
