I heard a great comment from a parent a while ago about the monster issue . . . Out of exasperation, they made a big deal of going into their kid's room just before bedtime, and when they came back out they declared that the monsters had agreed to stay out of that room forever if they were allowed to live in the parents' closet. They said this also cured the problem with nighttime visits . . .
