Writing Your Letters to God

Immediately after watching the movie, Letters to God, I was inspired to make my prayers to Jesus more personal like a conversation to a friend instead of a formal master daily to do list. On my sabbatical, I began writing my prayers out in a journal to assist me in my prayer life and to help me stay awake as I write them in the early morning or late at night. Which is great, because it will make it so much easier to write Him a letter just like the boy did in the movie. Instead of miling them I am going to keep them in books so I can turn to them occasionally and see how prayers have been answered. They also may be something to pass down to my children when I leave this earth as memories of their mother. You may want to e-mail your letters to God by e-mailing them to yourself and save them in a folder. The opportunities are endless!

If you remember from English 101 your letters begin with a salutation, a proper greeting, most commonly written one is Dear. So you could begin by writing Dear Jesus, God, Jehovah, Father etc. A more casual greeting you may use is Hello or Hey.

Next you begin the letter with an opening paragraph, a statement which gives the purpose of this letter. No need to worry about how little or how much you write when writing a letter to God, He knows the desires of are hearts before we even write it down. ( Matthew 6:8) This could be as simple as letting God know how your day is going or telling Him your mood.

Your following paragraph will be the body of your letter. This is the main points of your writing. When I began writing my prayers out I used the acronym ACTS for structure to keep my writing organized, simple and prevent me from rambling. ACTS stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. So the body of my letter will include each one othese as its main points.

Adoration is to adore God, worship Him, and to love Him with all my heart, spirit, and mind. Share praise to God for who He is. (Mark 12:33)

Confession is an opportunity to close the gap in between you and God by confession your sins.

Thanksgiving. Every second of the day, every breath we take, everything around us are blessings from the Lord. Give Him thanks for the gifts He has given you. Thank Him for answered prayers.

Supplication. Ask God for our needs and the needs of others.

The last paragraph is your closing. This would be a great place to summarize your letter, repeat the purpose and let the receiver know what kind of response you are requesting.

In conclusion you end your letter with a closing like Love always, Sincerely, or a simple Amen. Choose your closing to match the salutation that you used in the beginning of your letter and sign your name.

Make sure to include the date some where on your letter for future reference.
