More than a Name

by: Jeanie Cullip

Throughout the word, God reveals to us who He is, which offers us an opportunity to get to know Him more intimately.

Just as our names & titles are our personal labels that defines who we are to others. I am Jeanie, wife, mom, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, niece, friend, neighbor, etc...

In the bible the Old Testament refers to God in different ways from the words in original Hebrew and Aramaic. The New Testament refers to God's character through His attributes.

When we know God more intimately by His names we can personally call upon Him correctly during each appropriate time. Just as I am correctly called Mommy when one of my children has a boo-boo that needs to be kissed, friend when one needs an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on, wife when my husband is in need of some special TLC, etc...

The Old Testament reveals God is:

  • El Roi - The God Who sees
Genesis 16:13 The slave girl gave a name to the Lord who spoke to her: "You are 'God who sees me,' " because she said to herself, "Have I really seen God who sees me?"
  • El Olam - God who lives forever
Genesis 21:33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba and prayed to the Lord, the God who lives forever
  • Yahweh Jireh - The Lord will provide
Genesis 22:14 So Abraham named that place The Lord Provides. Even today people say, "On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided."
  • Abhir -Mighty One
Genesis 49:24 but he aims his bow well. His arms are made strong.
He gets his power from the Mighty God of Jacob and his strength from the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel
  • El Shaddai - God is more than enough
Genesis 49:25 Your father's God helps you. God Almighty blesses you. He blesses you with rain from above, with water from springs below, with many babies born to your wives, and many young ones born to your animals
  • Jehovah Rophe - Healer
    Exodus 15:22-26
  • Yahweh Shalom - The Lord our Peace
Judges 6:24 So Gideon built an altar there to worship the Lord and named it The Lord Is Peace. It still stands at Ophrah, where the Abiezrites live.
  • Yahweh - Redeemer
Psalm 19:14 I hope my words and thoughts please you. Lord, you are my Rock, the one who saves me
  • Jehovah Rohi - The Lord my Shepherd
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need

The New Testament reveals God is our:

  • Teacher
Luke 12:12 At that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you must say

  • Lord
Luke 12:31 But seek God's kingdom, and all your other needs will be met as well

  • Light
John 1:6-9 There was a man named John who was sent by God. He came to tell people the truth about the Light so that through him all people could hear about the Light and believe. John was not the Light, but he came to tell people the truth about the Light. The true Light that gives light to all was coming into the world!

  • Bread of Life
John 6:32 Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven; it is my Father who is giving you the true bread from heaven.
  • Anchor
Hebrews 6:19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and strong. It enters behind the curtain in the Most Holy Place in heaven,

  • Advocate
1 John 2:1 My dear children, I write this letter to you so you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a helper in the presence of the Father—Jesus Christ, the One who does what is right.

Romans 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved

Blessings & Giggles to you & yours,
