In your opinion have your children ever come home with inappropriate books from their school library?
What did you do about it?
My mom friend shared this picture on Facebook of a page out of the book "The Stupids Die" that her 1st grader came home with . Do you think it is appropriate or inappropriate?
while I do try to monitor what my kids read and watch, it is hard once they start venturing outside of the home.
ReplyDeleteI just have to have faith that I have brought them up well and feel confident in sending them out in the world.
I often will use books or shows like this to talk about what is wrong with the picture and what could have been said or done differently.
what is the book about? does it have even a point? You know the old saying "don't judge a book by it's cover." I don't think it'd be able to say if it's appropriate or not just from that. Although it doesn't sound like something I'd want my 1st grader reading....It's good to teach kids discernment so they can make those judgement calls on their own as they grow...use it as a teaching moment.
ReplyDeleteFirst I don't like the title of the book.
ReplyDeleteI think someone thought it was funny to have a family with the last name Stupid.
So if you replace the Stupid last name with another last name maybe that page wouldn't be horrible, but it's what else is in the book that I'm wondering about because of the title.
I think before I let my child continue reading it, I'd have to read it first to see if I'd let them continue or not.
It's like in High School I was required to read Catcher in the Rye for an English assignment, or get a failing grade on that assignment. I tried to explain to the teacher that we were a Christian family and my parents wouldn't like me reading the book.
He basically said that's your choice, but this is the assignment.
That book in my opinion was not appropriate reading, but I snuck it home and read it because I didn't want a failing grade. Yet, I blasted the teacher in my oral report over it. I embarassed him and every single boy in that class by letting them know in no uncertain terms what I thought of it and any boy or man that thought the material in it was normal and healthy. That teacher was a pain to me both in 9th and 11th grade, but I got the better of him both grades and he was thoroughly taken aback about by my strong Christian Faith.
I also reported him to the Principal both years for his treatment of Christian students in his classes.
