ReplyDeleteWe don't have a specific time - my children are super active with afterschool activities. I do try to model, have great books always ready for them, and read whenever we can (as I am cooking dinner, waiting for an appt, etc)

ReplyDeleteWe have family reading nights. Since our kids are different ages they take turns being the "leader" and choose the book (or chapter) to read that night. Furthermore, we visit the library every weekend to browse and pick-up new titles to keep the excitement level high.

ReplyDeleteWhen my kids were younger, I'd let them each pick a book and we'd all climb into bed together and I'd read to them. Of course, we often read each book more than once, or they'd jump out of bed to get another one. But it was ok, because I knew they enjoyed it. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteMy girl is 3 yrs old and I have been reading to her from the time she was a baby. No need to 'encourage' her to do it. At any moment I could ask her,"Do you want to read a book with mommmy?" and the answer is always "YES"...lol
I know when she learns to read she will enjoy books as much as I do.

We usually read a story every night before bed. Each one of my boys picks a book that they want and I read one and my oldest reads the other.

I am a subscriber. My #1 tip for getting kids to read is to let them guide the reading. If you have a child that will only read books about trucks, then let them read about trucks! Eventually they will pick up something different. If they are reading something they enjoy, they will continue to read!

That way it's easy to grab a cup of coffeee/snack or talk to the kids while I'm making supper. We use it tons.

an my tip is that I keep easy to read small books on hand for bedtime,I read one to them an then they read one back to me,they love it!
I'm a subscriber and we always read before bedtime and at naptime (even non-nappers). It's a good time for us to relax together and get some extra snuggly quality time in. My older son just started reading, so he has to read at least one little book when we read together!

We visit the library frequently. It's easy to do because I work there...LOL. Not only can you get your books from the library but most libraries have fun reading programs and summer reading programs. We take advantage of them!

we do phonics activities as well.
My parents were both ill, but still wanted to spend time with my kids. Each night after the kids got in bed they would call them to say goodnight and then my dad would read them a story over the phone. As my son got a little older he wanted to "read" to my dad. Now that they have both passed away the kids and I all treasure those memories.

ReplyDeleteWe read two books every night, one for each girl. So to mix things up, mainly for Mommy and Daddy, we go to the library every two weeks to explore new books. We often run across favorites that we end up buying. The cutest thing is my oldest daughter loves her books so much that she insists on sleeping with the book of the night.
I read to my daughter before bed. We read at other random times, too, but always before bed, thanks!

We inspire reading in our house by reading to the kids every day. WE let them pick out the book, and pick up new books a lot at garage sales, thrift stores, ebay etc.
We also encourage the 6 year old to read to her 4 year old brother!
I just subscribed! We try to have a period of time each day where we all read. Oftentimes it is before bed to calm down, but other times it is when the boys are starting to argue!

If they're in a dinosaur phase, we go to the library and look for stories about dinosaurs. If they've just seen the Shrek movie, we'll look for books featuring Shrek. ReplyDeleteMy son is only two years old but he loves to read. I read to him throughout the day and my husband and I always read to him before bed. I like to put a blanket under a tree in our backyard and take books outside so my son and I can read together in a fun setting. Sometimes we even read our own books which I think it is good for him to see that I like to read too!
I put all the "grandbaby" books on a low shelf so that they can reach them. I never have to say anything, because the minute they come in the door, they want a favorite book read. I always love to stop to read!
ReplyDeleteOur local library has SO much to offer throughout the summer including reading clubs. We make a trip a week to load up on books then we come home and share one each with each other. We also like to snuggle in bed at night and take turns reading our new and old favorites. This has been our family ritual since my daughter was newborn...going on seven years!

Have a weekly book reading playdate at your home.
We did a teddy bear book one week and each child got a small stuffed bear to decorate in theme with the book.(Got these at AC moore) Another week we did one about Walter The Farting Dog and each kid got a whoopie cushion..the kids really look foward to this :)

We visit a library almost daily for the activity, and then we sit in the children's room and read together for a while!

I take my grandkids to the library every Monday. (ages 6 & 3) It's a regular part of our special Monday's this summer. Then we make it fun.
ReplyDelete6 year old is the teacher and she reads to her students (3 year old and myself & sometimes grandpa, better known as "Tommy Trouble". Great practice for her to read. The three year old will be going to pre-school next fall so this is good for him.

We have a few in our bedroom for her and we have a pile in the living room. They are everywhere in the house and she ends up reading about 8 or more books a day. I read to my children since birth, took them to the library for children's reading hour, got them their own library cards BEFORE they could actually read and helped them choose picture books that they liked. Seeing their Mom and Dad enjoy reading set a good example for them.

I get my daughter to read and be totally into it by promising her rewards, like taking her swimming or extending swim time by a half an hour. This works like a charm, too. It works so well that she asks for a second book. I truly enjoy teaching my daughter to read, of course it helps that her heart is totally into it, too. Haa-haa-haa-haa-haa!

ReplyDeleteAlso, another tip to get my daughter reading is when we go on long road trip, I make sure we pack the car with a handful of good children's books. First, I will read the entire story/book or a story from the book and then I pass the book to my daughter when I'm done. Second, my daughter will read a story or the entire book, but ONLY according to the pictures because she does not know how to read, yet. I absolutely LOVE the stories she comes up with, she is very creative! Of course when my daughter is done with her story, I go back and assist her with actually reading the story correctly!

Finally, another tip I use to get my daughter to read is by reading to her every single night before bedtime. We sit on her bed with her somewhat in my lap so we are both looking at the page and she is following along as I read. We will literally read every single word in the story about five times or so. My daughter and I SLOWLY read the sentences, to make sure she gets each and every word correct. It's very time consuming, but very effective, really!
