ReplyDeleteThe best road trip was going to Lancaster, PA. All those country roads looked the same and we got lost several times but found some wonderful places hidden in the middle of nowhere. The kids loved a petting zoo that outside of a gift shop that we found. They played with the animals while I bought some amazing candles.

I was living in AZ when we drove to MO to get married. On the way back we only made it as far as KS when we hit some debris on the road and blew the transmission of our brand new car! We had to drive it home back to the dealership at a top speed at 60mph, and since I had a terrible flu my husband had to do the whole drive straight through! We made it home just in time to leave for our honeymoon though!

ReplyDeleteMy hubby, daughter and I took a road trip in April to Appomattox Courthouse,VA. I am a history buff and I like taking trips to historical places. (Appomattox Courthouse is where General Lee surrendered to General Grant to end the Civil War.) Several of the original buildings are still standing and the area is a National Parks Service Park...
Little did we realize we were visiting on the 145th anniversary of the surrender! They had reinactments going on and all kinds of awesome things to enjoy! My daughter now has a deeper understanding of the civil war, and is really falling in love with learning about history. And my hubby, who "HATED" history in school, loved it! Thanks

My most memorable road trip was driving my oldest son back to Chicago to college after winter break. Two days before my friend and I were supposed to leave to drive him back, my transmission died on my van. I literally picked up my new SUV 1 hour before we began our road trip. We'd been driving for an hour when a awful snowstorm hit. I had no idea how to turn my headlights on and had to pull off the road to figure out all the buttons. A trip that normally takes a little over 5 hours ended up taking almost 8 because of the treacherous roads. The trip wasn't a total white-knuckle drive..we ended up stopping at IKEA on our way home and packed that SUV full.
First, let me say I hate to drive.
ReplyDeleteWe live on the east coast and were driving across country. It was my turn to drive when we hit Colorado;
we had just passed through Denver and I heard a loud boom, I freaked thinking I had blown a tire. I was screaming,"what was that, what was that". As it turned out a big bag of potato chips had popped because of the altitude. My son still teases me about that.

ReplyDeleteI LIVE for road trips! One of the weirdest (and NOW funniest) trips I took was years ago with my then-boyfriend. He and I lived in L.A. and we decided to drive up to San Francisco for a long weekend. The PCH is an amazing drive, and we enjoyed it immensely, stopping off frequently to pop into an antiques store or take pictures of the coastal view. I use a wheelchair, and on one of these stops I realized I had a flat tire. We spent the next half-day looking for a bike shop to get a new tube and tools to fix my tire. When we finally got that taken care of, we headed to the Golden Gate Bridge for some sightseeing--and I promptly got another flat tire on my OTHER wheel! At least this time we knew where to find the bike shop, so we got the second wheel fixed.
By the time we took care of the flat tire hassles it was nearly time to turn around and go home. Unfortunately, though, the brakes in my car had been seriously abused on those crazy inclines San Franciscans call 'streets', and they completely went out! We spent the whole last day of our weekend getaway in a parking lot fixing the brakes on my car so we could drive back down the PCH toward home.
The whole trip seemed to be one disaster after another, but the drive is the loveliest I have ever seen in my life, and the memory of that trip is one my sweetest ever! :)

ReplyDeleteWhen I moved from Indiana to Las Vegas in 1994 - 3 weeks after I graduated from college - we drove the 1st 29 hours straight thru - in a 1989 Dodge Colt hatchback packed to the hilt (we couldn't even put the seats back). We stopped in Flagstaff for the night, slept a bit, then hit the road for the last 5 hours. Let me tell you, the last 5 hours were worse than the 1st 29. It was 1) 107 degrees with no air conditioning and 2) the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, so we were stuck in traffic to boot. One other funny bit - I brought my beta fish in a little bowl. He made it the 1st 29 hours, and obviously thru the night spent in the hotel (he was at our feet for the whole drive) - but he basically got boiled in the last 5 hours of that hot hot hot trip. Poor fishy.

ReplyDeletemy most memorable was one where my sister in law slept all the time - only occasionally waking up and saying 'I'm hungry, lets stop and eat!'
I'm a subscriber. Our best road trip was actually a train trip. We took Amtrac from Milwaukee to Orlando when the kids were 6 and 7 and they happily entertained themselves the whole time up in the dome car. I'd definitely recommend it if your kids are that age (two overnights and a day but worth every minute).

ReplyDeleteMy most memorable road trip was during the summer of my sophomore year of college. My husband (then boyfriend) and I drove out to a state park near Pittsburgh to go camping, but there was a huge thunderstorm that ended up with us sleeping in the car. Rather than continue camping, we drove up to Niagara Falls and through the fingerlake area of NY State. I think we drove practically all night, just talking and drinking coffee. The freedom was wonderful.

We camp every year during the summer time. We recently bought an older motorhome and took our first trip in it about a month ago. Being such an old thing (1988).... we had questions if we were even going to make it there. It is so big that its kind of scary. :) Anyways, we hadn't even made it out of our neighborhood and both kids (2 and 4) were already crying. They said it scared them. Too loud and felt like we were going to tip over. :) I thought i was going to have a heart attic myself. Well, we made it there finally. Nothing fell off and we didn't tip over. What a relief! On the way back though.... we were driving and heard a loud bang. I turned around to look out back windows and saw something black laying in the middle of road behind us. I asked my husband... "did we run over something?"... All he said was "hmmm... i don't know". So then we got in a little fight because he couldn't remember if we ran over something... MEN! :) So finally I made him pull over off to the side of the highway. Turns out we had a tire explode. What to do on a sunday out in the middle of no where. We ended up driving 10 mph to the nearest town with cars honking their horn at us the whole way. We made it to town to find that on a sunday nothing is open to put on new tire. :( So with that being said we took a chance and drove 10mph all the way home. What took 2 hours to get there took us 6 hours and two very cranky kids to get home. On a good note... we went camping again a couple weeks later... everything went fine. Except, my husband forgot to unplug us from the campsite and we drug a few feet of extension cord all the way home. :) Got to love camping!!

Our family had a wonderful first roadtrip up to the snow for New Years. It was our first time ever being in snow and we had a wonderful time. The beauty of the Northern mountains was an awesome sight. We were at awe when we finally came to the snow laying like a blanket on the ground, it was awesome.

ReplyDeleteOne road trip I really remember is when we traveled from Texas to Tennessee. While going through Louisiana, we drove across the 24 mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. It is such a long bridge! I thought we would be on that bridge forever and the whole time I was just hoping that we didn't experience any vehicle problems.

My husband and I moved from the west coast to the midwest and so made the drive and then several weeks later road tripped from there to the east coast for our anniversary. We did not have children then, so it was a whole different story. We made stops along the way, camping and seeing all there was to see at our leisure. It was gorgeous seeing different parts of the country and an unforgettable adventure.

ReplyDeleteThe best road trip was driving through the middle of the desert in Mexico on a 12 hour road trip. We were in a small Mexican car with no a/c and no radio. I was stuck in the backseat the whole trip. We didn’t speak any Spanish which made it very interesting to cross the borders between the Mexican states. The border guards with their machine guns added to the whole adventure. It was the adventure of a lifetime.

email subscriber and my road trip story is: On the first trip we took with our then three girls to myrtle beach in our jeep and the a/c broke and we couldn't get it fixed in time and had to drive down there in temps reaching 100 degrees and we were staying about 20-30 miles from the beach as it was due to the last minute reservations and were miserable due to the driving distance and just being hot and then the next year we decided to rent a vehicle and we realized once we were packed in it and on the road it didn't have a cd player...who makes cars these days without a effing cd player and had to listen to the same song playing on the radio for over 4 hours on the way to myrtle beach to make better memories...

ReplyDeleteI don't have any horror stories for traveling, since we don't travel very much. Our best road trip was to Florida last winter. We spent a month visiting family in several spots down there. We took my inlaws motor home, which was the size of a bus. And since we homeschooled that year, we were able to bring everything with us and do school work on the way down and home. That was very helpful in keeping us on track for school. Plus the bus was big enough to have all 3 children seperated at times when they needed a break from each other. Plus there was a tv in the back where they could watch their movies, a bathroom so my husband didn't have to stop every 15 mintues for potty breaks, and a kitchen and fridge so the kids could snack when they were hungry. I would love to win this travel pack since we will be acutally moving to FL in the next few weeks and could use some travel assistance this time around in the car instead of the motor home!

I have to say that every road trip we have taken has been pretty stressful, but we do it to ourselves. Traveling across the country with 2 children under the age of 4 can be pretty hectic. Just stopping to go to the bathroom ends up being chaos with one parent waiting in the car with the baby and the other taking the big boy potty and then vice versa. Ah, I can not wait to get a bigger vehicle, so we do not feel so cramped! lol

These days we take a mini roadtrip about once a month with our grandkids. One day a month we pick up our 2 grandkids and take them out for a day road trip. We visit little towns around us.
