At the age of 8 we discovered Savannah was in desperate need of glasses she was diagnosed with Amblyopia. A word I was not familiar with so I discovered quickly it's definition.
Amblyopia occurs when the brain and eyes do not work together properly. In persons with amblyopia, the brain favors one eye.
The preferred eye has normal vision, but because the brain ignores the other eye, a person's vision ability does not develop normally. Between ages 5 and 10, the brain stops growing and the condition becomes permanent. Savannah was 8 our chances of correcting her eye were very slim. So, we needed to face this with a positive attitude for her to feel confident in her hew fashion addition to her sweet little face.
Savannah was not happy about her eye being patched or the drops going into her eyes. However the positive attention we gave her and the fun trip to pick out her new glasses definitely made for a smooth transition for her.
I was reminded about our journey of Savannah's eye glass wearing days when I was sent this adorable book about a little boy and his dislike of wearing his own glasses. I thought what a perfect book to give to a child who wears glasses or has just been told they will need to wear them.
Only Randy Kazandy hates his glasses. He thinks they make him look like an alien from outer space.
So he does everything he can to not wear his glasses, and even gets rid of them in some very ingenious and devious ways.
Only his mother has another pair, and then another pair, and even another pair.
Will Randy ever get used to wearing his glasses?
With colorful illustrations by Kim Sponaugle the rhyming verse builds confidence and self-esteem, and makes for a quality reading and learning experience at home with your child.
Randy Kazandy, Where Are You Glasses is based on the real life experiences of her brother in-law, Randy Jacque, who was born cross eyed, had to have corrective surgery and wear corrective lenses from the age of 17 months. He struggled with having to wear glasses, and did everything he could to get out of it. It took Rhonda 12 years to write the book and get it published.

I am already a subscriber, but just wanted to say my 5 yr old daughter has Amblyopia and Strabismus. She is pretty good at keeping her glasses on, but we do need to say that famous "Where's your glasses" at least once a week.

Subscriber: When we bought transition glasses (lens darkens in sunlight) my daughter stopped misplacing her glasses. I don't think the lenses shade enough for bright sunlight.
